My Time in the Slammer

Dear people reading this blog -

This past weekend (Memorial Day weekend to be exact), I was charged with a UTI and Kidney infection and sentenced to 3 days in the slammer (AKA hospital). Who knew I could be such a deceiver of illness, I mean I acted just fine for mommy and daddy - just ran a low grade temp for a couple of days.

Then after they took me on a 6 1/2 hour drive to Garden City, KS - I decided I would let them in on my little secret - that I was really sick. They thought we would go to court (AKA the ER) and get off with minor virus and be sent home with the fine of a prescription. No sir! After multiple witnesses (labs, xrays, other tests) the ER doc said we weren't going nowhere! So off we were carted to the cell I would spend the next 3 days of my life in, along with mommy and daddy.

Mommy and me after my sentencing. Our sad faces.

My new jail cell.

They even made me wear an inmate uniform!!!

But I'm a tough cookie, ain't no prison gonna hold me down.

I can still touch my toes, even with a 105+ degree temp!

I can one-hand feed myself even with my left arm all taped and boarded up for the IV. (Mommy and Daddy called it my broken winglet) (Check out my 4-pack in the back ground!!)

And even though they took almost everything away from me, I still found stuff to put in my mouth and eat!! Suckas!!

Luckily, I did have some visitors which made my stay go much faster! Didn't get pictures of them all, but here are some....

While it wasn't so bad b/c we had a great Sheriff (Doctor), we did miss the family reunion we went to Garden City for. After I got out and all charges were dropped, I did finally get to go visit some family who hadn't met me yet. I sure am glad to be feeling better and back home though.

Later my peeps!
Addie 'The Sicko' Maturey

Things that make you go - Mmmm!!

You know, I had this idea of what it would be like when we introduced foods to Addie for the first time. What will we feed her, when, will it be in the new highchair, what faces will she make, will she even like food?? Well, after stiff ol dad said we couldn't do solid foods until she was 6 months I thought I had plenty of time to read as much as I could on what the best first foods are and make an informed decision - which I decided it was probably going to be avocado.

Unfortunately for Addie she had been suffering bouts of constipation and we tried multiple things to relieve her discomfort to no avail. However there was one option we hadn't explored - FOOD!! So we bought that girl some prunes and in simple Maturey family fashion propped her in her bumbo on the coffee table and let her go wild. I thought - Prunes, GROSS!! - but to my surprise she loved them! She did so good, it's like she's been eating for years. We would say 'bite' and she would open her mouth when the spoon came to her lips, swallow most of it (of course some came back out), and then lean forward for more. I, of course, didn't do so hot. Who knew how messy it could really be. Really most of the food on her face is from me missing her mouth than from her spitting it out and drooling.

She only got to have the prunes a couple of times and then back to boring old milk all day. She will be 6 months in a couple of weeks and I've already stocked the pantry with yummy goodness for our new adventures of eating. Hopefully when the veggies in my garden grow I can make her some homemade baby food.

PS - PRUNES STAIN!!! :(

Just because I'm cute!

First Play Date

We finally made it to a play date today. We were supposed to go to Heritage Park in Olathe for Earth Day but mother nature decided that the earth need a long, slow drink of water so we had to resort to indoors at the Oak Park Mall play area.

We met one mom from my SAHM (acronym deciphered: Stay-At-Home-Mom) group and her 2 boys. I also ran into a gal from church who was there with her 2 boys. It was a fun time, really nice to get out and socialize with other adults. Since Addie isn't big enough to play yet I held her the whole time. She just watched and smiled and laughed. It was so cute! She didn't have to play on the toys, watching alone gave her pure enjoyment. just watching must be exhausting because she fell asleep on my shoulder with her head tucked under my neck. It was really sweet. I am excited for her to be able to get around on her own and play with the other kids. I did learn a good lesson today though - never leave your baby carriers at home!! She is getting SO big so after about 30 minutes my arms were killing me! From now on, the Baby Bjorn or Amy's Moby Wrap will come with us everywhere we go.

Tomorrow is another play date! If it doesn't rain we're going to the zoo! Hopefully I can take some pictures and post them of our adventures.

It's official....

I quit my job and am going to be a Stay-At-Home-Mommy! It has been a hard decision but I finally chose 1 side and went for it. I know things will be different - some good, some hard - but I think in the end this will be a good decision for all of us.

Things I will miss:
- adult conversations at work
- having a reason to dress up and wear jewelry and heels
- a paycheck :)
- limited access to snacks!

Things I won't miss:
- working in a dead end job
- being on someone else's clock
- working for 'the man'
- empty promises

Things I look forward to:
- seeing Addie's milestones
- being best friends with my baby
- having playdates
- keeping up with housework better

Things I hope to be better at while at home:

Curse of the Pink Pants

Monday Addie took her first big trip to the Mall. We were in search of the perfect Easter dress. Her Nini (Lana) went with us. After sifting through hundreds of couture frocks, we settled on a pretty white dress with pink ruffles from JC Penneys.

The trip was a complete success, Addie was in a good mood and wide awake and it was the first time we used her normal stroller versus the jogging stroller. After getting Addie's dress we went to the EyeMaster store so Nini could get her glasses fixed. That's when it happened - my beautiful, feminine daughter got called a BOY!! The lady in the store said, 'Oh, HE'S so cute!'

I was like really, HE?! She has a pink paci on a green strap with pink polka dots, she's cuddled up to a pink stripped blanket and her shirt, while green, has a brown bird on it with pink and purple designs.

Am I confused or doesn't PINK = FEMALE?? If I had a boy did she really think I would have loaded him up with pink gear for a public outing?? While I wanted to verbally tear her to shreds for being so completely oblivious to the obvious gender of my baby - I simply said, 'She's a girl' and turned around and walked out.

The only thing I can think of that would have given her any inclination that I was toting a baby boy around is the fact Addie was wearing brown pants. I spent hours and trips to multiple stores (including the stores where you could spend as much on 1 outfit for a 3 month old as you could a 31 year old) to find those darn brown pants. I made it a mission to find pants for my daughter that weren't pink. I mean how many pairs of pink pants should 1 person have?? Addie had about 5.

I just didn't understand why retailers don't make anything for baby girls that isn't pink. I might have learned that lesson the hard way. But don't think that one ignorant lady is going to stop me from putting brown pants on my baby girl. Nope, Addie will be a trend setter and wear boy colors proudly. She's a real Coco Chanel of our time - not going to abide by society's rules that girls must wear clothes that scream 'I have 2 X chromosomes!'

Well that and I will now make sure she's wearing a bow until her hair grows in. ;)

Addie goes to church

Due to the relentless cruel weather we've had this winter we were nervous to take Addie out too much. It seemed like every Sunday we had either a blizzard or sub-zero temperatures so we had not been able to take Addie to church. Finally the sun was shining and the streets were clear so this past Sunday Addie made her big debut at church.

Daddy got to dress Addie for the big occasion. Since Addie has been growing like a weed, we have to guess what size she wears now b/c some things she can still wear newborn, some things are 0-3 months but mostly she wears 3 month size. As I was getting ready, I could hear Craig talking to Addie about her outfit and how part of it was too big. Hearing this, I figured he would find something else that fit more appropriately and put it on her. Nope. I come in to find that she is wearing a pink dress with a little white sweater - fits nicely, all good. Then I see that the 'shorts', as Craig calls them (aka bloomers) are on the side. I look under her dress to find he put a white onesie under the dress. He put her white tights with ruffles on the bum on her but put the onesie over the ruffles. Apparently he felt the ruffle bummed tights were too risque for our little girl. To top off this beautiful arrangement, he had her in black patent leather shoes - WITH the paper stuffing still in the toes!! Ok, black shoes with a pastel pink dress and white tights looks silly enough - but the tissue paper in the toes was the topper. Since they were new he didn't realize it was there. HA!

I changed her shoes but she went to church proudly in her outfit picked out by Daddy.

Sshhh - somebunny's sleeping.....

Watch out Hef - there's a new bunny in town!

Model in the making - Part II

Model in the making

Here are some pictures of our beautiful little Addie.

Addie the Snowman

Who knew we were long lost relatives of Frosty! Good thing our little snowman can't melt because she's also part hot pepper (aka Mexican)! Ha!

First Walk

I actually took this picture in Jan on a day it was warm enough to take a walk. I know what you're thinking - warm enough in Jan. to take a walk?? In KS??
There really was one day where if we bundled little Addie up in a suit fit for an Eskimo, was perfect for a nice leisurely walk around the pond in the park a few blocks from our house. So what that the suit was 2 times bigger than it's wearer, she stayed nice a toasty.
Here's a picture from our day - Addie's first walk.

No More Tears!!

It's happened - Addie has cried her first tear. Now don't get me wrong, she's had her fair share of cries and screams (all of which sound extremely fake but oh so cute) but she has yet to actually shed that crocodile tear. She actually had a clogged tear duct because no tears have been coming out!!

I know this milestone shouldn't be one that makes a person happy but it's a sign of her growing up and all the miracles that happen in that process. To know a person isn't born with the ability to shed a tear, that it's something one acquires through development, is simply amazing to me. It speaks wonders of just how wonderful and complex life is.

Watching her grow is like watching a masterpiece being painted by Van Gogh - starts with a blank canvas and over time turns into something extraordinary. Everyday I wake up excited to see what new things she can do or how she has changed physically. BTW - her hair is finally growing despite her bald spot in the back of her head! Yay!!

Having a baby has made me appreciate and respect life in a new way. Being a mom has given me a purpose and a reason to be be alive. It's the most wonderful thing one could experience for sure. Craig better watch out - these feeling and the fact I've been faithfully watching the Duggars - we could end up with 20 little Matureys walking around. Even if we would be still having kids when we were 60!

Happy 1 Month Birthday Addie

On January 18th our sweet baby girl turned 1 month old! How time flies. Feels like she's been a part of our family for eternity but at the same time feels like she just got here so why is she already 1 month old?!

In just 1 short month our lives have been forever changed by this cute little being that we like to refer to as 'mini-Craig'. I know it's corny to say and until I became a mom I didn't understand the magnitude of this statement - but she completes us. It's so awesome to watch her and imagine all the things we are going to experience together, first foods, learning to ride a bike, playing Santa, homework, sleepovers, boyfriends, make-up, career decisions, marriage, grandbabies, family dinners, and on and on. It's just so darn exciting to have our own family, an extension of Craig and I - the person who makes Craig and I one. We LOVE her!!

Look how much she's grown!!

All strapped in - let's go home

After 3 long days in the hospital, we finally got to take our baby home. Although I was a little nervous about having her home with no nurses to help or answer all my 'new mom' questions, I was ready to get into a normal family routine.
Although I sure do miss the excuse of being able to wear moo-moo hospital gowns all day!!

More birthday pictures

Daddy feeding the baby bird. Had to do a little supplementing the first couple of days.

First bath. Craig said she hated getting her hair washed. Poor thing.

Holding Addie for first time while still in recovery. I had a long, hard day - can you tell??!!

This is her 'Argh!' face. She still does the 'one-eye' stare, it's so funny!

Holding Daddy's hand.

Pouty face - which she has since perfected. Heart melting!

First time seeing Addie!
